Cloth vs. Disposable Diaper: Which One is Good for Your Baby ?

Parents often get confused when a choice is to be made between Cloth and Disposable diaper as both type of diapers have pros and cons.

Convenience: Cloth diapers are more efficient option to choose between the two but is not convenient to use in traveling.

Maintenance: Cleaning of cloth diaper is a messy work and involves lots of energy, water and laundry detergent whereas disposable diapers can be easily disposed off.

Environment Impact: Disposable diapers are not environment friendly whereas cloth diapers can be reused for any number of times.

Helps in Potty Training: Cloth diapers make potty training easy for the baby as babies can feel wetness in cloth diapers.

Ingredients: Disposable diapers are made of toxins called dioxin which may be harmful for baby skin whereas cotton diapers are made of Cotton, Flannel or Terry cloth.

Absorbency: Disposable diapers are more absorbent which keeps baby skin dry and healthy as compared to cloth diapers.

Frequency of change: Disposable diapers lasts longer as compared to cloth diapers.

Diaper style: Disposable diapers are available in free and pant style and cloth diapers have hook, buttons and Velcro closure.

Cost: Cloth diapers are more economical whereas cost of disposable diaper is high if calculated for 2 years (2 years is considered as standard time when baby starts potty training)

Recommendation

It is recommended to use cloth diaper at home and buy small pack of disposable diapers for traveling or for night time. You may also use cloth diapers for nights but it requires changing at every 2-3 hours so it is advisable to use disposable diaper so that baby’s sleep is not disturbed. You may buy approx 15-20 cloth diapers for your newborn and may wash at every alternate day.
